Our History
In 2015, The Austin African American Business Networking Association (AAABNA) and The 15th District Chicago Police Department partnered to boost the health of the community, prevent crime and violence, and increase safety initiatives. With the intention to be proactive and not to be reactive, this annual event gives the community something to look forward to. Our partnership between the Chicago Police Department, Elected Officials, the Chicago Park District, and many other community stakeholders; has created a positive impact in all aspects of the community, shedding light on the importance of our health.
Our Story
The Austin P.O.W.E.R. 5K first began in 2015 to highlight that when the community works together, we have strength or P.O.W.E.R. (People. Organizing. Wealth. and Economic. Resources.). Each year, a different theme is selected to bring awareness on health related situations that we experience in our community. Whether it be physical, mental, or emotional health; it matters and should be discussed. Join us every September, on Chicago Avenue in the Soul City Corridor! Get involved!
Our Theme
The theme for the 2024 Austin P.O.W.E.R. 5K will be centered around the importance of Men's Health. Earlier this year, Cook County Commissioner, Dennis Deer passed away after battling a life-long health condition. Those who knew Deer might have never known that he struggled with health issues, his resiliency and fierce passion for the community never wavered. His dedication made him a tireless servant and advocate for the Chicago community. Like Deer, there are many other men who put their health on the back-burner to focus on work, family, and other areas of life. This year's race is dedicated to discussing how we can aid and raise up our men into higher health!
